The Church and Politics
I’ve been asked many times from spiritual leaders about the messaging around politics and the church. Especially right now during the 2024 election.
What I have learned over the years is that we need a correction of the prohibition that has been pushed upon the church for years that we should not be involved in politics or government. That the church should be silent when it comes to issues that divide.
But I strongly believe that we should have a corrected biblical commandment to shun this prohibition. And we must act biblically in our relationship with political and government affairs that we have been called to.
The church must not avoid issues that divide. Whether that is sexuality or race or finances or government. We must have the answers to the questions people are asking.
A nation is never stronger than when the church is healthy and exercising its voice in society.
Here are six principles that I adhere to and that help guide my understanding of the church and politics.
Main text:
Paul gives a complete definition of God that corrects all of our preconceptions in Colossians 1-2.
As a spiritual leader, you can use these principles and verses to shape a message on the church and politics.
1. Prayer and intercession places me in the right frame of mind to approach this subject
•1 Timothy 2.1-2
2. I remind myself that the sovereignty of God can redeem every elected leadership position
•Daniel 5.18, 21
3. Leadership is not about perfection but it is about principle
•Proverbs 28.2
4. Contrary to our societal belief, submission to authority is powerful
•Titus 3.1-3
5. We must all seek the welfare (good) of the people and the place where we live
•Jeremiah 29.7
6. God is before everything, God is above everything, God is in everything, and God is after everything
•Psalm 33.12-13
Finally
There are so many things that we must unlearn. Things that we have learned in life that must be corrected. Especially when it comes to this topic.
A disciplined look at the scriptures will help you to formulate a real biblical ethic when it comes to the church and politics.
