I Have Something To Say
I Have Something To Say
On this Juneteenth Eve, and with the racial tension going on in our world today, I want to say, “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” And I want to encourage my white friends.
Don’t let anyone tell you that your voice doesn’t matter when it comes to racism.
Some will tell you that it’s not your place. Some will tell you that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Some will tell you that you will never be able to understand.
But, you need to know that it is actually our responsibility to step up because we have been the major cause of the problem, and, we must become the major cause of the solution. Of course it will be difficult to undo 400+ years of systemic racism right now.
You may not feel like it’s your place to say something. Or that you have the right words or language or terms to use. And it is very true that we will never understand.
But, if not you, then who? If not here, then where? If not now, then when? It is always the right time and place for everyone to be anti-racist and to support Gracism.
This is what I did many years ago to come to the imperfect place where I am at today.
Listen.
Learn.
Love.
Then Lead.
Please take the next 24 hours to prepare something to say tomorrow, Friday, June 19, 2020. You can see my story for a great explanation of Juneteenth from the home website of the organization.
It might begin with something like “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
